Husks of winter

On a walk yesterday afternoon I saw both the remnants of last year and the first signs of spring. Welcome warmer weather!
I looked up the name of the first plant and found that its many common names include hitch hikers, black-jack, beggarticks, farmer's friends and Spanish needle, but it is most commonly referred to as cobbler’s pegs.
